During my most recent trip to Las Vegas, we stopped in and watched the final day of the World Series of Poker. It was pretty amazing to see the amounts they were playing for and how much was on the line. The crazy thing was that most of the guys at the final table weren’t even poker professionals. So that got me thinking, what skills do I need to make it playing WSOP poker?
Most of the players don’t actually pay the $10,000 entry fee. Instead, they qualify in a satellite tournament and the prize is usually an entry into the World Series of Poker. Given the popularity of poker, there are definitely a lot more amateurs playing than ever before. But the key is to figure out how to capitalize on these players. Poker is a tough sport since no matter how ‘good’ you are, you still need to be lucky and get great cards once in a while. Bluffing will only take you so far.
Poker Doesn’t Guarantee a Loss
The problem I have with most games in Vegas is that no matter how much you play, you will eventually lose. All of the casino games are slightly in favor of the house no matter what you do. You can count cards in blackjack but that is generally frowned upon, and slot machines have a payout rate less than 100% built into their code so the casino literally can not lose money on it.
The great thing about poker is that you are competing against other players. Although the casino takes a small cut of every pot, there is always new money coming into the table and players are shuffled around to keep things even. I don’t know if I’m ready to make a career out of it, but I’m a lot more likely to be found in the poker room than pulling on a slot machine.
