A move to a new home can turn into a nightmare, unless you find a good moving company. Indeed, the right choice of a moving company will save you money, time and worries. So that your move was quick and trouble-free, it is crucial that you thoroughly research available moving options and companies ready to help you. In other words, you need to understand what to look for, what to avoid and what to expect when choosing a moving company.
The first thing you need to understand is that cheap movers are usually not the best option, because you risk to face an array of problems and even pay more than you’ve expected. When inviting people to your home and entrusting them to relocate your belongings, you need to be confident that everything will be done quickly and in a damage-free manner. While the price is important, the quality of the offered services is one of the main points you need to consider. Always check the company’s experience, reputation, damage history and customer reviews.
For example, when looking for a moving company in San Francisco, you want to get the best services for the lowest price possible. Comparing several companies is the best way to achieve your goal. Just compare quotes from several moving companies and you will find the most affordable services in your area. To get accurate quotes, be specific about the kind of services you require.
Generally, when moving locally, you will be charged an hourly pay. Thus, to get an idea of how much you will eventually pay, it is recommended to estimate how much time the entire process might take. You need to consider packing, loading and uploading time. Of course, do not forget to add a couple of hours for unplanned events, like traffic jam or bad weather conditions. If you pack things (or at least a greater part of them) on your own, you will save much time and therefore money. However, there are items that require specialized packing, so do not be greedy and let professionals take care of these items. This can guarantee that they will be not damaged during transportation.
When you are moving from state to state, the transportation rate will depend on the weight of the transported items. To reduce the load and price, pack only those thing that you cannot do without. Other stuff you can donate to local charity organizations or friends.
Most moving companies are very busy on weekends, holidays and Fridays. Thus, you can get a better deal if you move during off days like Monday, or off the season. If you are not in a hurry, why not use this chance?
Hiring professional movers is the best option when moving your home, because their experience will save you time, money and headaches. So, be careful and choosy when selecting a moving company.

Yes this is one are where I found a lot of fluctuation between different companies. Before my recent move from Michigan to California I did check into options to have someone else do a lot of the work, but in the end I’m happy / glad that I just allowed a couple extra travel days on my trip and did the work myself.
I received moving / transportation quotes from $9k to $18.5K.. As I mentioned a big fluctuation.
In the end I rented a truck and provided a potluck feast to my neighbors and friends to help my pack… Unfortunately the unpacking was all left to me once I arrived. But I didn’t mind the unpacking in 60 degree weather.. It was the packing and Loading in -10F weather this year that really got to me.. Even with all the help and heaters would could find in the neighborhood… We couldn’t break that chill.
I ended up moving my self for a fraction of the cost… About 30% of my lowest quote and on the other end if cost me 2 extra work days to accomplish the task…
A little hard work pays off…
I moved a lot during college and for a few years after but it was always in the same city and I didn’t have much stuff so I just loaded up my car. When we moved up to the OC though, we had a 2bed/2bath condo full of stuff that needed to be moved. It was the middle of summer and I knew I was going to get a tax deduction for moving (due to new job) so I shopped around and compared hiring a truck myself vs. hiring movers.
I ended up hiring movers and it was purely amazing haha. $850 for the entire move (minus $250 or so in tax savings) and I barely had to do anything on one of the hottest days of the SoCal summer. Only problem is now I’m spoiled so hopefully I can go back to moving myself again next time if I don’t get the tax break.

$850 that does seem like nice deal on moving pretty much hands free.
It was a bit of work for me to move but where they really get you is on the freight charges and hauling 2200 miles that added up a lot.
It was also an experience driving a loaded down moving truck over the Rockies thru a snow storm.. Having to pull off and sleep in the truck on the side I70 along with all of the other truckers..
I seem to like to do things the hard way too. Honestly, I’d do it again!!! Given the chance.
