The sports utility vehicle, or SUV as it is more commonly called, is becoming a vehicle that is the most popular in the automobile industry. The ancestors of today’s SUVs are the Jeeps and the Land Rovers from World War II with the first modern SUV being the Jeep Cherokee that was first released in 1984. The SUV is considered a combination vehicle with the chassis of a truck but properties like that of a station wagon. It can be a suitable middle ground for some offering practicality and power and many benefits that other types of automobiles do not provide.

One of the joys of owning an SUV these days is improved gas mileage. Due to the innovations of the Ford Motor Company and Ford SUVs, the gas mileage of an SUV has improved and become more fuel-efficient. Crossover SUVs provide both the extra space of an SUV but the smaller size of a car. These SUVs have better gas mileage so filling the tank occurs less frequently than with a traditional SUV.

The benefit that is the greatest of owning an SUV is its off-road capabilities. It is suitable for remote areas, places that are hard to reach and areas which may have unpaved roads. Four-wheel or all-wheel drive is one of the features of an SUV so it also equipped for travelling in harsh weather such as snow and ice. With its higher frame and seating, the driver has better visibility looking out of the window and onto the road ahead.

SUVs also have more roomy interiors and additional cargo space. There is typically more space for passengers and some can hold as many as nine people. An SUV usually does not have a trunk like a car does but the back area of an SUV can be expanded with folding rear seats. Many SUVs are big enough to carry all the members of a family and their possessions that they may bring with them on a trip. With regards to space, SUVs have the advantages of a van but are not as large or unwieldy.

In addition, SUVs usually come with a towing option so that there is the ability to tow trailers, boats and other items that would not be possible with a regular car. While trucks have a towing capacity that is greater than an SUV, an SUV provides the passenger transportation and towing options that trucks typically do not provide.

SUVs have a high driving position which can lead to increased safety. As an SUV is raised higher above the ground than other vehicles, SUVs are able to drive over debris or small objects in the road more easily and sometimes there is minimal or no damage to vehicle. In addition, people tend to feel safer in a car with a high driving position and many SUVs have scored highly for passenger safety.
