When you take the first few tentative steps towards going it alone in business, life becomes a blur of client meetings, accounting and late, late hours. The learning curve is steep. You’ll find yourself becoming inseparable from your laptop, and when the stakes are high, reliability, performance and portability can make all the difference between success and failure. As one of the most important investments you make when setting up your business, you will want to make the right decision. Here are some of the best options for the budding entrepreneur in need of some excellent new tech.
Toshiba Satellite C50D, 15.6″ Laptop
Somewhat akin to the Dell laptop, Toshiba laptops enjoy a deserved reputation as workhorses, and the C50D is no exception if you’re looking for a top quality portable computer. For robustness and reliability, this is a jackpot device, with a sturdy chassis and serious processing power, with a souped up spec that can handle the most demanding of tasks without protest. A DVD writer comes as standard, which is a handy added extra for sending and backing up bulky data, while a slick keyboard makes typing as enjoyable as can be. As far as budget models go, you’ll be getting some serious bang for your (limited) buck with the C50D, leaving you more money for those elegant premium business cards…
ASUS T100
When prospecting for new business, or pitching a client your vision, you need a tablet that’s easy to power on, interactive and transport. When you’re sitting at home working for hours on a database or polishing your business plan, you’ll most likely prefer a keyboard, and the power to handle multiple tasks with ease. Fortunately, this budget-friendly convertible laptop can handle both with its endurance battery life, fully installed Windows 8.1, and vivid display.
HP Pavilion 15-p142na
With its AMD8 quad-core processor, this powerful piece of kit is perfect for scrutinising the day’s news, running video and writing up reports – all at once. A six hour battery life ramps up the portability factor, while its terabyte of storage space is roomy enough to house all of your business and entertainment requirements. The model comes fitted with Beats Audio, for richer sounding music when you’re backing out the background babble of a noisy commuter train. Add a crisp, HD screen to the mix, and you have one serious contender for your next big business collaboration.

Personally I have a Macbook Air and I love it. Very portable and the battery life is amazing. But it’s only good because I don’t use excel or other business software a lot. If I needed excel then I would consider a thinkpad instead. I hear they’re awesome machines.
